Central trade unions rejected outright the offer to implement a marginal increase in the allowances being given to public sector steel plant employees at the sub-committee meeting of National Joint Committee on Steel Industries on Sunday.

At the meeting held in New Delhi, the unions decided to stick to their demand for payment of 46 per cent of basic towards perquisites as being given to the executives of Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited and Steel Authority of India Limited.

The management reportedly explained their difficulty in conceding their demand and agreed to give increase in various allowances to some extent.

“At present, the employees are getting nominal amount towards fees, conveyance, reimbursement, night shift allowance and other perquisites. We want payment of 46 per cent of basic as offered to the executives on the recommendation of Rao Committee,” Steel CITU president J. Ayodhyaram said.

He said the management was resorting to discriminatory treatment towards the employees while giving preference to the executives in getting higher amount towards perquisites.
