An undertrial gave the slip to the escort police at Makavarapalem in the district on Tuesday.

Pangi Appa Rao (32), a former Home Guard, was involved in a rape case in Narsipatnam Town in 2010. He was lodged at the Central Prison here and was taken for the hearing in the Narsipatnam Court on Tuesday.

After the hearing, two Head Constables were escorting him back to the Central Prison on Tuesday afternoon. The bus stopped at Makaravapalem Bus Station and one of the escorts went to purchase the ticket in the bus station, while the other went to attend nature’s call, according to Kothakota Inspector Krishna Varma.

The accused got down from the bus and escaped. A search for him in the vicinity proved futile. Mr. Krishna Varma said that the accused was handcuffed and expressed the view that he couldn’t go far away.

In another case, a four-member gang of burglars, involved in 12 cases under different police station limits, was busted by the P.M. Palem police on Tuesday.

Gold ornaments, weighing around 75 gm, silver articles weighing 1 kg, six LCD TVs, a DVD player, two cameras and some other electronic goods, all worth about Rs.5 lakh were recovered from the gang.

P Kanaka Raju (23) and K Pradeep Kumar (24), residents of Madhurawada were involved in several house breaking incidents in the city. They were taken into custody by the PM Palem Police for moving suspicious movement at Kommadi on Monday evening. During the interrogation, the duo confessed their crime, according to Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) S Varada Raju. The accused kept the stolen ornaments and electronic goods with their friends U. Chinna and P. Shanti, who were also arrested by the police.
