Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) will be hosting a two-day seminar on Hindi language at GITAM University from Thursday. Announcing this at a press meet here on Tuesday, former Rajya Sabha member Yarlagadda Lakshmi Prasad said that the meet will focus on problems faced in propagating Hindi language as an official language. Over 120 Hindi officers from various organisations, pan India, will participate in the two-day meet.

Mr. Lakshmi Prasad also informed that steps are being initiated to make Hindi an official language in the United Nations.

According to him, former NDA Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had earlier started the work but it did not progress after his tenure. “We will now revive that move,” he said.

The former MP also said that the Central Hindi Institute in Agra, which was started by a Gandhian from Andhra Pradesh Moturi Satyanarayana in 1960 is making efforts to revive it. The institute trains about 200 foreign students in Hindi every year at its Delhi campus and about 100 at Agra. “These foreign students are our real cultural ambassadors and we shall use this as a platform to re-launch the move,” he said. Director of the Institute Prof. Mohan was also present.
