Two contract workers died when they fell down from a ladder at Hindustan Shipyard Limited, a Government of India Undertaking here on Thursday.

The deceased were identified as Mohammad Ali, 40 and Ramesh, 41. The incident reportedly occurred at about 9.45 am when they were painting a 50,000 DWT (deadweight tonnage) bulk carrier at a height of 60 feet. Eyewitnesses watched the fatal fall with horror and immediately alerted the safety department. "On reaching the spot within a few minutes, we found them dead," a HSL official told The Hindu .

Hindustan Shipyard Labour and Staff Union general secretary K.M. Kumaramangalam alleged that excess pressure to finish the work to meet the deadline had caused the accident.
