Two contract workers died when they fell down from a ladder at Hindustan Shipyard Limited, a Government of India Undertaking here on Thursday.
The deceased were identified as Mohammad Ali, 40 and Ramesh, 41. The incident reportedly occurred at about 9.45 am when they were painting a 50,000 DWT (deadweight tonnage) bulk carrier at a height of 60 feet. Eyewitnesses watched the fatal fall with horror and immediately alerted the safety department. "On reaching the spot within a few minutes, we found them dead," a HSL official told The Hindu.
Hindustan Shipyard Labour and Staff Union general secretary K.M. Kumaramangalam alleged that excess pressure to finish the work to meet the deadline had caused the accident.
