Some of the major city traffic islands will get a totally different look once the beautification drive, to be taken up, is completed.
Several feel good themes and those interesting to children have been lined up for 14 of the 36 traffic junctions in the city. For instance, the traffic island near the busy Asilmetta will get Buddha made of fibre glass to induce a ‘momentary peace,’ as an official put it.
On the Beach Road, 14 different animals, including those facing extinction, will be put up apparently to attract children. At Hotel Green Park junction, where growth of trees is good, giraffes will appear. At MVP Junction where the road is wide and concrete-paved, camels will remind citizens of the growing urbanisation. At Turner’s Choultry, where the ratham of Lord Jagannath is parked and ahead of which the rathyatra is taken out, the famed Konark Wheel will greet citizens.
The fibre glass pieces will be put up at a cost ranging from Rs.80,000 to Rs.1.8 lakh.
Municipal Commissioner M.V. Satyanarayana, who screened and okayed the designs to be made by artist Ramana Murthy, said on Thursday that the work would cost Rs.21 lakh. It would be completed in a month.
Bus stopsRoyal palm trees would be grown at 11 bus stops along the BRTS route each at a cost Rs. 90,000. Grown up trees of 15 years would be transplanted. Mr. Satyanarayana said once the wall along the BRTS route on the Station Road was completed, pictures on North Andhra culture would be depicted. Such depiction was taken up in several cities highlighting respective cultures, he added.
