The Traffic Safety Week commencing January 18 will be observed with a purpose and not as a formality, Commissioner of Police B. Shivadhar Reddy has said. He was speaking at a programme launched to make people ready for the road safety campaign here on Saturday.
Mr. Shivadhar Reddy released stickers with short slogans, which stress the need to wear helmets while riding two-wheelers and fasten seat belt while driving a four-wheeler. It was also advised against driving vehicles with headlights in high beam mode.
“During the Road Safety Week, the theme of which this year is ‘Arrive alive’, the stress will be on making the drivers understand and follow the basics. By taking small precautions one can avoid accidents,” Mr. Shivadhar Reddy said. The pedestrian would be given importance.
All schools would be involved in the exercise. That was the reason why the Traffic Safety Week would be organised from January 18, when schools reopen after Sankranti vacation.
People would be explained the danger of driving a two-wheeler with children made to sit on the pillion. They should also know when and how to cross a street, he said.
Accidents and people not following the road rules were social problems, he said, and felt that everyone should be involved in making the roads safe.
Mr. Shivadhar Reddy said the campaign conducted during the safety week would be followed up later.
