With the revival of interest in Telugu following the proactive measures by the government it is time that the contribution of the exponents of the language who spanned the late 19 Century and early 20 Century – Tirupati Venkata Kavulu – be commemorated, president of the Lok Nayak Foundation Yarlagadda Lakshmi Prasad said.
Addressing mediapersons here on Saturday, he said Minister for Investment, Infrastructure and Ports Ganta Srinivasa Rao would be unveiling the statues of the Tirupati Venkata Kavulu – Divakarula Tirupati Sastry and Challapilla Venkata Sastry – on the Beach Road on Sunday.
The Tirupati Kavulu held their own in Telugu during a period when Sanskrit held the sway in intellectual circles.
The two toured the State and received accolades from the then rajahs and patrons of fine arts.
The two have contributed to making Telugu language of intellectual discourse and poetry, Mr. Lakshmi Prasad said.
They were contemporary of Koparapu Kavulu who also contributed immensely to furthering the language.
Interestingly the statues of the Tirupati Kavulu are coming up near the statues of the Koparapu Kavulu.
By installing the statues of the two eminent poets the city would be honouring the language and would help establish the city as the cultural capital of the State, Mr. Lakshmi Prasad said.
Eminent singer and avadhani of TTD Medasani Mohan and professor of Telugu in University of Hyderabad Betavolu Ramabrahmam are expected to attend.
Special programme
A special programme on the works of the Tirupati Kavulu is also being organised on the occasion.
Noted theatre artiste Gummadi Gopalakrishna would recite from the iconic work of Tirupati Kavulu – Pandavodyoga Vijayam – president of the foundation said.
