It was just another crowded day at one of the popular malls of the city – CMR Central. Scores of people were milling around. Amidst the busy scene, the music volumes went up and the speakers exploded with racy music while a team of youngsters joined hands and grouped together in the middle of the entrance.
Soon, it was a posse of people grooving to the music — all for a cause.
On Friday, 50 students of Timpany School (all three branches) presented a flash mob at the mall to raise awareness on environmental issues.
“The idea behind the flash mob is to convey the message of sustainable development and draw attention to several environmental issues like depleting natural resources, noise pollution,” said school principal Nalini Nelson.
Flash mobs have become an effective tool to spread awareness about issues among the public.
What began as a social movement in Manhattan in the year 2003 has today come a long way and is the newest craze to have taken the city by storm over the last few years.
“It is easy to draw attention of the public to critical issues when you add some fun to it. The purpose of spreading awareness is fulfilled because people are curious to know what’s going on,” said Sai Sanjana and Hasitha Sharon, Class XII students of the school.
ThemeThe main theme was ‘Living Sustainably’. Where on Earth are we heading? Will there be enough food and water when I’m older? How important is renewable energy? Does everyone have access to clean water?
These were some of the thought-provoking questions that the students brought to the fore through posters.
ConferenceThe flash mob was part of the XII National PEAS Conference that took off at the school on Thursday.
