The National Alliance for People's Movement team will visit Visakhapatnam city in a couple of months to study the impact of pollution from Vedanta Zinc factory, Coromandel Fertilizers, Rain Calcining Limited and Visakhapatnam Port Trust.

Two of the five national conveners of NAPM, Gabriela and NAPM Andhra Pradesh representative B Ramakrishna Raju visited several areas Chukkavanipalem, Mindi, Eduruvanipalem and Tunglam in and around Vedanata Zinc factory where people were suffering from ground water pollution.

An action plan would be chalked out for Visakhapatnam city to save it from pollution, which would then be taken to people to make them understand the dangers. Meanwhile, Ms. Gabriela visited Kovvada village in Srikakulam district also to have a look at the proposed nuclear power plant.

She was actively working at Kudankulam in Tamil Nadu where a 6000 MW nuclear power plant has been proposed and in the first phase 2000 MW would be installed by current year-end.

She expressed dismay at the Government's apathy towards food security of people of the region by destroying the fertile wetlands for the sake of setting up the power plant.

In all developmental programmes the people's interests were taking a backseat, she observed.
