The TDP has opposed any move to convert Andhra University into a central university stating that it would affect the interests of local students.
At a press conference here on Wednesday, senior leader Bandaru Satyanarayana Murthy said the number of colleges under the university had already been reduced by 300 owing to their affiliation to Adikavi Nannaya University.
Besides, students belonging to the backward North Andhra region would not be able to face the national-level test for admission and stand to lose if it was made a central university, he pointed out.
The former Minister said that late Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy had promised a central university in Visakhapatnam at Sabbavaram.
A central university could be set up in 1,000 acres of land available while maintaining status quo on Andhra University, he said.
TDP would launch a movement against any move to make Andhra University a central university and hold an all-party meeting on it, Mr. Satyanarayana Murthy said.
On the reported green signal for the merger of Anakapalle and Bhimunipatnam municipalities with the GVMC, he said with hardly any basic amenities the new areas would not gain anything and opposed the merger.
He cited the conditions in villages merged earlier forming the GVMC not being improved.
He charged the Ministers and MLAs from the district with not being able to stop flight of projects. They were not paying any interest as most of them were “migrant leaders,” he said.
TDP (Urban) president Vasupalli Ganesh Kumar and leaders E. Mariadas and Dasari Venkateswara Rao were present.
