Taken for a ride after extracting password

April 21, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:48 am IST - VISAKHAPATNAM:

An employee of a private firm in the city revealed his SBI credit card particulars along with the PIN and within few hours received shock of his life on receipt of SMS that two online orders had been made for an amount of Rs.17,560.

On being told that for redemption of points earned by him, they were verifying particulars from verification section of SBI credit cards.

“I didn’t suspect them and told them the one-time passwords (OTPs) twice when the anonymous caller asked me if I am getting OTPs or not,” P. Panduranga Prasad, the victim, told The Hindu on Monday. Both transactions took place on April 14 – the day he received the call.

On realising that he had been duped, he lodged a complaint with the Fourth Town police on April 16.

“I know that chances for recovery of the amount are very bleak. The reason for me lodging a complaint is to create awareness among others not to become victims like me,” said Mr. Prasad.

All the premier banks have been sending SMS alerts to their customers warning not to reveal their bank particulars to anyone.
