A 35-year-old man from Sriharipuram area of the city succumbed to swine flu while undergoing treatment at a city hospital on Tuesday. He had been admitted to the hospital on March 26 with pneumonia and spitting blood with cough.

Immediately on admission, he was put on the ventilator and doctors started treatment for swine flu. Swab test confirmed swine flu on March 28 and he continued to be on the ventilator as his lung had collapsed. Swine flu symptoms had been noticed two or three days before he was admitted to the hospital, District Nodal Officer for swine flu L.B.H.S. Devi said.

Fifteen members of his family were given preventive treatment.

This was the second death due to swine flu in the city this year. A woman in her mid twenties and in an advanced stage of pregnancy had died on January 29.

Visakhapatnam, a place where many foreigners come for a visit, recorded the highest number of swine flu deaths in the State after Hyderabad. The district recorded 29 cases during 2009 when swine flu was noticed for the first time in India.
