A group of socially conscious volunteers under the aegis of Swecha cleaned up 200 metre stretch walls and area at 48 number bus stop near the RTC Complex on Sunday and painted the walls with lively images.
A group of 40 IT employees and engineering students, who are members of Swecha, which works for promotion of Free and Open Source Software, took the initiative as a social responsibility. The bus stop like every other public facility in the city was typically a site for urination and garbage dumping by the insensitive commuters and passing public. “We have painted a message on the walls urging the public not to soil the area with urination and gave a direction to the nearest public amenity,” state convenor for Swecha G.V.S. Giri told The Hindu.
“We have received good public response to our efforts, a number of passersby joined us in removing the posters and clearing the area, some others donated money to buy paints and brushes to complete the task,” he explained.
“Following Hudhud, the city has been seeing outbreak of contagious diseases like swine flu and it is essential that the residents of the city have to step in to clean our surroundings and to maintain it. We started this project with Diamond Park, we cleared up the area and had a volunteer stay put there to make people not soil the spot. In the last one-and-a-half months the place has remained clean encouraging us to take up clearing of other locations,” Mr Giri said. Swecha which operates out of Guntur has established an office at Jagadamba recently, he added.
