The National Institute of Oceanographic Technology (NIOT) has been asked to submit its report on the steps to be taken to stop beach erosion by June 15.

The NIOT has been identified as the nodal agency to propose a solution to the beach erosion after a multi-institutional study of the erosion of parts of the beach in the city.

Teams of experts from a number of organisations, including Andhra University, National Institute of Oceanography, Indian Maritime University, University of Hyderabad, and Gayatri Vidya Parishad Engineering College, conducted field studies on the beach erosion caused by sea surge.

The State government has appointed a committee to deliberate and suggest suitable measures to stop the erosion that has been a major cause for concern.

The committee, convened by Commissioner of Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation, consists of experts from NIO, NIOT, and Port Trust and subject experts among others.

The multi-institutional team of experts had taken up a study of the near shore sea dynamics and the NIOT was asked to submit its recommendations by June 15, GVMC Commissioner Pravin Kumar told The Hindu .

WB funds sought

The government has sought funds from the World Bank for reconstruction of the damaged beach road, which included permanent steps to curb beach erosion and rebuild structures like Rajiv Smrithi Bhavan.

The approval from the World Bank is expected soon.

The institute is identified as nodal agency to find out a solution to the problem
