Which bustling Indian city is called the ‘Jewel of the East Coast’ and the ‘City of Destiny’? Who was the first American President to be assassinated? Which State has URL extension as .ae?

From general knowledge to civics and biology to history and sports, the 15 edition of ‘ The Hindu Young World Quiz 2014’ covered most subjects for juniors, from Classes VI to VIII, who took part in the contest at Kalabharathi Auditorium here on Saturday.

Out of 178 teams, which participated from various schools located in Kakinada, Tuni, Srikakulam, Payakaraopeta, Anakapalle, Peddapuram, Sabbavaram and Visakhapatnam, six teams made their way to the finals, cracking the prelims.

Of the six schools that took part in the finals – Aditya Talent School stood first scoring 74 points. R.K. Mastan Sha Goud (Class VIII) and G. Sri Harsha (Class VII) emerged champions.

With a total of 50 questions (preliminary: 25 and finals: 25), quizmaster V.V. Ramanan pepped up the event with his peppy intervention and sense of humour.

Lauding the initiative taken by The Hindu and efforts made by the participants, Chairman of Visakhapatnam Port Trust M.T. Krishna Babu said: “Be focused on your studies because that helps you gain an edge over others. For students, five years from Classes VIII to XII is considered to be crucial as their future will be defined based on the efforts invested during this period. Dream big and strive hard to realise it, overcoming your weaknesses.”

Later, he gave away prizes to the finalists and winners. All the participants received goodies and certificates. Finalists received watches and trophies, while winners grabbed Firefox bicycles, trophies and watches.

Regional General Manager of The Hindu T.V. Suresh and Assistant Regional General Manager (Advt.) G. Srinivasa Rao were present.

The presenting sponsor of the quiz contest was Britannia Milk Bikis and the associate sponsor was Firefox. Success Notebooks and Reynolds were gift partners.
