The recent gang-rape in Delhi led many people to think in terms taking proactive measures to help curb atrocities against women and providing succour to the victims.
In the run-up to the International Women’s Day, Chaitanya Sravanthi (CS), a voluntary social organisation, has given a cheque for Rs.50,000 to district Collector and Magistrate, and handed it over to Municipal Commissioner M.V. Satyanarayana near the GVMC Gandhi statue here on Thursday to provide funds for victims of sexual assault in the district. Appreciating the selfless gesture of the organisation, Mr. Satyanarayana said: “We (senior officials and voluntary organisations) are proposing to create a separate head of account and a trust for donations to help rape victims. The need of the hour is to empower and protect women. We have to make sincere efforts and join hands to fight for the cause.
The cheque will be handed over to district Collector and we will work in an inclusive manner to provide financial assistance to the victims through the proposed trust.” There is no point in blaming the government alone. Everybody should take responsibility and create awareness on social-policing and rope in SHGs for the purpose, apart from collecting funds for the trust, suggested president of CS S. Shirin Rahman. She called for a secure public transportation system for women who work late into the night.
Corpus fund
Referring to the recent announcement of Central Government of Rs.1,000 crore for the safety of women, she said that district administration should also take up a similar initiative to help victims of sexual assault. “I think every district should pool in funds within their jurisdiction and create a corpus fund to help the victims. Once an account is opened, we are planning to get more contributions,” she added. Hundreds of CS members assembled and displayed placards.
