Small steps taken benefit in large measure. Women should take care of their physical fitness as healthy body is essential for a healthy mind, daughter of President of India Pranab Mukherjee and well-known Kathak dancer Sharmistha Mukherjee has said.

An accomplished Kathak dancer and one of the most sought-after choreographers in the world, Ms. Sharmistha Mukherjee was visiting the City of Destiny for the first time to stage a Kathak performance at the 6th All India Classical Dance Festival – Vysakhi Nrithyotsav organised by Nataraj Music and Dance Academy.

With an aim to empower women and help bring awareness on the maintenance of haemoglobin level among girls, initiated by the team of Vizag Development Council here on Thursday, she appealed to the young girls to eat nutritious food and maintain their Hb level. “Simple food like coriander, sesame seeds, fenugreek seeds, seasonal fruits and iron rich vegetables help increase the iron content. These are affordable and can be incorporated in our daily diet with ease. Methi or sesame seeds soaked in water overnight and then taken next day increases the Hb volume,” she said.

Appreciating the council members for bringing awareness on the subject among people and for taking the initiative to organise various blood donation camps, she said: “Every man should ensure that his wife, mother, sisters and relatives should take care of their health and come forward to donate blood. Women, in many States, are ruling as leaders. Unfortunately, the vast sections of women are not empowered as they should be. I think men should recognise and value the potential of woman irrespective of the domain they chose to work,” Ms. Mukherjee added.

Vice-president of Vizag Development Council and CEO of Symbiosis Technologies O. Naresh Kumar said: “Good physical fitness and confidence level to face the general public is lacking among the women in the city. Almost 90 per cent of women who come forward to donate blood are ineligible due to low Hb count. The focus of the initiative is to empower women and ensure that men in the family encourage women eat nutritious diet.”

Among others, president of Vizag Development Council P. Vishnu Kumar Raju and chairman of Confederation of Indian Industry Visakhapatnam Zonal Council G. Sambasiva Rao also participated in the event which concluded on a classical note with a Kuchipudi performance by Krishna Sannidha.
