Station-based e-catering catching up

October 30, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:46 am IST - VISAKHAPATNAM:

Station-based e-catering service launched by the Indian Railways in Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, and Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh and at Secunderabad in Telangana, along with 41 other stations in the country, is steadily gaining popularity.

The service started picking up in the last two-three months with more reputed food chains and aggregators being picked up by the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) for providing wider choice to passengers.

In Visakhapatnam, while Mumbai-based Travel and Food Services will provide meals to passengers, YUM Restaurant of Visakhapatnam will provide fast foods like pizza, according to an IRCTC official in Bhubaneswar.

“In Vijayawada, food is being provided through the three food plazas of the IRCTC at the station and Dominos Pizza has been empanelled to provide pizza.

Some more private caterers would be empanelled.

“In Tirupati, the IRCTC food plazas are providing food and Dominos Pizza is supplying pizza. Bhimas group has applied for supply of food,” N. Sanjeevaiah, Deputy General Manager (Catering and Tourism), South Central Zone, told this correspondent over phone on Thursday.

“The e-catering facility is catching the fancy of passengers during the past few months with the empanelment of more branded food chain providers,” he said.

The train-based e-catering services are already being provided through the IRCTC to facilitate passengers to get meals of their choice at their seat on trains.

Travelling passengers can now order food of their choice from leading private caterers at an approaching station. Station-based e-catering will be only for stations and not on moving trains.

Railway commuters can now pre-order their meal and get it
