Disturbed by unnecessary blaring of horns by motorcycle and heavy vehicle drivers, students of Mahathi Degree College, inspired and led by volunteers of a civil society organisation, India Youth For Society, took up a campaign to create awareness among the road users at the NAD Junction.
The volunteers organised a rally holding placards urging people not to use horn when it was not required. They pointed out that blaring horns were posing a health hazard, especially to children.
Noise pollutionTaking a cue from their observation that most of the two-wheeler drivers and heavy vehicle drivers were blaring their vehicle horn making the noise pollution levels to go up, the volunteers got onto the road to educate the vehicle users on the potential health hazard.
The insensitivity of the vehicle users was highlighted when a small boy shut his ears and asked his father to stop honking, secretary of IYFS M Jagadish said. The vehicle users ignore the fact that there were people walking on the road and race on the roads and suddenly honk creating panic among the pedestrians, he pointed out. Another issue they noted was that many vehicle users incessantly honk even when traffic lights have turned red and there is no way the traffic can move.
The volunteers educated the road users on the need to use horn to alert or when there is a danger and not resort to continuous honking. Mahathi Degree College Principal G. Madhusudhana Rao, IYFS president Palakonda Madhu and secretary Mummana Jagadish participated along with a number of students of the college.
