The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation will designate an officer of Deputy Executive Engineer as a special officer to supervise safety of tourists and visitors on the city beaches, Municipal Commissioner M.V. Satyanarayana informed on Monday.

This along other steps were being taken following directions given by Minister for Ports, Infrastructure and Investments Ganta Srinivasa Rao following the drowning of six students of GITAM University in the Rushikonda beach on Wednesday.

Watch towers would be erected and life guards engaged along with life jackets at the five dangerous spots on the beaches. Warning and caution boards would be set up at various spots between the Ramakrishna beach and the Rushikonda beach.

“We will also study the steps being taken at Goa beaches to prevent accidents and decide on which of them can be implemented here”, Mr. Satyanarayana said.

A meeting on beach safety is being held with Commissioner of Police on Oct. 25 and a coordination meeting is being planned with representatives of educational institutions, voluntary organisations, Department of Oceanography of Andhra University, Department of Fisheries and other related departments and organisations after consulting with the district Collector, he added.

Secretary to the Department of Municipal Administration and Urban Development Adhar Sinha and Mission Director of Mission for Elimination of Poverty in Municipal Areas (MEPMA) Anita Ramachandran will be holding meetings at Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation on Tuesday.

Mr. Ahdar Sinha would review the BRTS corridor and flyover works in the morning while Ms. Anita Ramachandran would examine the implementation of programmes of MEPMA and the JNNURM in the afternoon. Municipal Commissioner and other officers of Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation would attend the meetings.
