A 26-year-old man was stabbed to death in broad daylight and in full view of the public barely 500 metres from the busy Old Gajuwaka junction here on Wednesday.

The victim was identified as Konathala Nookaraju of Gajuwaka, a worker in a scrap yard.

The incident happened at about 2 p.m. even as Superintendent of Police of Visakhapatnam Koya Praveen was passing by the same route with his escort party.

Seeing a gathering and some commotion, the convoy slowed down. On enquiry, the SP was told that a man was being stabbed by a group of over five persons. He immediately ordered his personnel to apprehend the accused.

While two were caught, the others managed to flee.

The local police, on patrol duty, rushed to the spot and took into custody the two persons, and shifted the victim to KGH, where he died shortly after admission.

The arrested were identified as Bharat of Guntur district and Shivaji of Gantyada.

Police said that Nookaraju was earlier employed with Pyla Prakash, a small-time scrap businessman, and allegedly developed illicit relationship with his wife.

Thereafter, he left Prakash. But Prakash nursed a grudge and employed five of his workers to eliminate Nookaraju, it was alleged.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police G. Ram Gopal Naik, the police launched a manhunt for the others involved in the crime, including Prakash.
