A slew of measures are in progress to contain pollution from Visakhapatnam Port Trust and once these measures are in place the pollution will get reduced by 90 per cent, Visakhapatnam Port Trust Chairman Ajeya Kallam has said.
Over the next two, three years about Rs.1,000 crore would be spent on various steps to tackle pollution, he said at the valedictory of Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation’s sports and cultural meet on Tuesday evening.
Fully covering the conveyor system as per the suggestion of the Pollution Control Board has been going on. It will be completed in two months.
Fifty per cent of the work on the construction of a 27-foot-high wall at the stockyard has been completed. Roads will be laid from inside the port to facilitate passage for traffic. Use of bicycles will be encouraged.
Reiterating that the well-being of citizens was always the concern of the port, Mr. Kallam said Rs.10 crore was for a botanical garden. Repairs to an auditorium at Medical College have been taken up with an outlay of Rs.50 lakhs.
Mayor Pulusu Janardhana Rao expressed happiness at employees participating in competitions enthusiastically. The same spirit (of winning) should be shown in serving the citizens, he appealed to them.
Municipal Commissioner V.N. Vishnu said sports would keep employees fit to play a more active role in their day-to-day duties.
The GVMC Main Office won the overall championship with 220 points and won the Rolling Shield introduced this year; Zone V and Zone III stood second and third respectively. Zone V Commissioner K. Ramesh and Section Superintendent P.Padmaja were adjudged best players among men and women respectively.
The Mayor, Mr. Kallam and Mr. Vishnu gave away the prizes. Cultural programmes followed. CPI(M) floor leader B. Eswaramma, several corporators and officials participated.
