Six-year-old girl run over by bus

A six-year-old girl was mowed down by an APSRTC bus near Srinivasa nagar in Simhachalam area in the city, on Wednesday.

The accident triggered a protest from the relatives and the locals in the area and they demanded severe action against the driver for negligent driving.

The deceased was identified as V. Basanthi (6), a native of Koraput, Odisha, and had come to Visakhapatnam along with her parents to visit relatives at Srinivasa Nagar.

According to Gopalpatnam Traffic police, the incident happened when Basanthi was crossing the road along with her mother. Basanthi died on the spot due to severe head injuries. Immediately after the incident, the bus driver ran from the spot. The locals as well as a few family members gathered at the spot and staged a protest, demanding action against the driver.

The Gopalapatnam traffic police had to intervene to pacify the crowd. In the meantime, the police have taken the bus driver into custody and have registered a case.

This takes the toll to eight fatal accidents in a total of 19 accidents by APSRTC buses in this year.
