Six contract workers fell ill after gas leaked from a pipeline in the Steel Melt Shop-I of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant on Monday.

The workers were referred to Visakha Steel General Hospital where they were administered first aid and later discharged. A spokesman for VSP, who described the incident as `minor’, said after the workers reported giddiness and irritation while cutting grass below the gas pipeline, they were referred to doctors.

Steel Plant Employees’ Union general secretary D. Adinarayana and deputy general secretary V. Dhanaraju said due to leakage of blast furnace gas from a pipeline, two of the workers present at the spot fainted. “All of them recovered a little later,” they said.

A fire and blast at oxygen pressure reduction station of Steel Melt Shop-II killed 19 employees on June 13. The accident is under probe by a high-power committee headed by former Chairman of Steel Authority of India Ltd S.R. Jain.
