With an aim to sensitise the people of the port city on the importance of ecological protection, the silent sentinels of our coasts – the Coast Guard – conducted an environmental awareness walk.
The walk that was flagged off and led by City Police Commissioner B Shivadhar Reddy on the Beach Road on Sunday morning had over 700 persons, including youth and students, enthusiastically participate. The walkers, including 137 NCC cadets and 90 students of GITAM Institute of Management, held aloft placards and banners calling for protection of environment. Commissioner of Police who flagged off the walk The programme, conducted by the Indian Coast Guard District Headquarter No 6, Andhra Pradesh, was a part of a series of events planned as a run up to the Coast Guard Raising Day on February 1, Commander Coast Guard Andhra Pradesh DIG M. A.Thalha said. The Coast Guard, that has a mandate to protect the Indian maritime interests including protecting the marine ecology in the Indian waters apart from protecting it from terrorist threat, has been conducting a number of outreach programmes in the run up to the Formation Day celebrations, he explained. The CG had conducted a blood donation camp and an interaction session with students of different colleges. The CG regularly participates in a number of programmes on environmental protection.
