Bhagat Singh in his protest, conviction and subsequent death became a rallying point for the youth of the nation in the Freedom Struggle and continues to inspire the youth of the country, Communist Party of India State executive member J.V.S. Murthy has said.
Addressing the party leaders and cadre at the statue of Bhagat Singh on the Beach Road on Saturday to mark the 82 anniversary of martyrdom of the freedom fighter, he recalled the values that Bhagat Singh stood for. Bhagat Singh did not try to escape the police custody and suffered incarceration and in the jail launched a struggle for the rights of political prisoners.
The privileges being accorded to political prisoners in India was thanks to the hunger strike and protest by Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev, he said.
More importantly the country has to be grateful to Bhagat Singh for galvanising the nation during the freedom struggle.
Bhagat Singh’s steadfast commitment to his principles continues to fire up the imagination of all the people who are leading and participating in people’s movements, he said.
Earlier, the party leaders and cadre garlanded the statue of the iconic freedom fighter and paid homage to him. Former MLA G Demudu, district secretary of AP Mahila Samakhya, secretary CPI City unit M Pydiraju and assistant secretary K Sattiananjaneya were also present.
Later in the evening members of AIYF and AISF took out a torchlight rally to observe the martyrdom day. M Srinivas and Chandrasekhar led the rally.
