Thirty-eight activists of the SFI, who were on fast for the last five days in front of the Collectorate here demanding that the government solve the problems relating to hostels and other issues, called off their protest following an assurance from district officials that the issues that could be solved at the district level would be addressed to immediately.
Additional Joint Collector Y. Narasimha Rao, Deputy Director of Social Welfare Srinivasan, and BC Welfare Officer Chinnababu, along with MLC M.V.S. Sarma, offered fruit juice to the students to end their fast.
Mr. Sarma also assured the students that their problems would be raised in the Legislative Council and felt that a special DRC meeting on hostels would help in solving the problems.
Mr. Narasimha Rao said, if necessary, drinking water tankers would be arranged from the GVMC and a meeting would be held every three months on hostels issues. Basic amenities would be taken care of, he said. Among the students who went on fast were SFI State vice-president Jagan and city secretary Chinnari.
CPI(M) city secretary B. Ganga Rao, district secretary of UTF Y.A.R.K. Prasad, and DYFI leader B.A. Naidu expressed their solidarity with the students.
