With increasing incidents of atrocities on girls and women, the State government is planning to introduce self-defence courses in its schools, HRD Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao has said.

Giving away certificates to 50 girls and women who were given training in self-defence course for a month by NGO Chaitanya Sravanthi on Sunday, he said a pilot project was already under implementation under an NGO, ‘Bandi,’ in Guntur.

Following Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu’s instructions, training was being given from three to six weeks in martial arts for girls of Class V to X, the Minister said. He also gave away cash awards to 10 meritorious students.

Former Vice-Chancellor of ANU V. Balamohandas gave ₹1,000 to the girl who stood first. He lauded the initiative taken by the NGO.

Former VUDA Chairman S.A. Rahaman underlined the importance of self-defence for girls.

Describing the background in which the training was taken up, Chaitanya Sravanthi president Shireen Rahaman said consumption of liquor was one of the major reasons for crime against women. The Minister facilitated Karate instructor Vijasekhar. Students gave an impressive demonstration.
