Students of over 1000 high schools in the three Hudhud affected districts of Srikakulam, Vizianagaram and Visakhapatnam would take up planting of saplings starting Saturday. The children would be motivated to take care of the plants to restore the lost green cover, Minister for HRD and Education Ganta Srinivasa Rao said.

Launching ‘Let’s Green Vizag’ campaign with planting of saplings on the premises of NMC High School of the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation here on Saturday, he said some 3.2 lakh students in the three districts would participate in the sapling plantation programme.

Terming the pre-Hudhud green canopy of the city’s pride, he urged the students to also take up the responsibility to restore it. He asked the students to nurture the saplings they had planted by paying attention to it before and after school.

The Education Department had found that 1000 schools in the region had been affected by the Cyclone and had worked very hard to ensure that they did not pose any danger before the schools were reopened on Monday, he pointed out.

The plants would be geo-tagged by the Pheonix IT Solutions under its ‘Cityzen’ campaign and the status of the plant and its growth could be monitored from remote location using a smartphone app developed for the purpose, he explained.

Visakha North MLA P Vishnu Kumar Raju, who presided over the function, thanked the Forest Department for providing the saplings at such a short notice. He also thanked Oakridge School for donating 1000 saplings.

Commissioner School Education Usha Rani urged the students to come forward to plant more saplings and at the same time study well as they had missed significant time due to the cyclone.

CEO and managing director Pheonix IT Solutions Murali Krishna Gannamani, District Education Officer Krishna Reddy and others were present.
