Sanitation workers belonging to GVMC Employees Union on Wednesday evening called off their three-day-old strike following an agreement with officials in Hyderabad.

Union general secretary P. Venkat Reddy said an agreement was reached on 12 of the 21 demands. The government in principle agreed to increase the wages of sanitation workers on a par with the fourth class staff, he said. The union was demanding increase of wages to contract and outsourced workers to Rs.12,500.

A.P. Municipal Workers and Employees Union called for the State-wide, four-day strike from Monday. Around 2,000 workers belonging to the union were on strike in the GVMC. Earlier, in the morning the striking workers went on a dharna at the GVMC office braving the downpour. Besides, hike in wages, they were demanding payment under ‘010’ account through treasury, house sites, issue of health cards.
