Scores of students gathered in front of the statue of Mahatma Gandhi near the Central Administrative Office of Andhra University and staged a protest, under the aegis of Samaikhyandhra Student JAC, on Friday seeking that the State should remain united. They cleansed the statue of the Mahatma with milk and also the YSR statue nearby as 16 MLAs of YSRC had tendered their resignations. The JAC leaders demanded that the 19 ministers, 174 MLAs and 27 MPs from Seemandhra should resign within 24 hours, failing which protests would be staged outside their residences.
Student JAC State convener Lagudu Govind criticised Seemandhra MPs like Kavuri Sambasiva Rao and Lagadapati Rajgopal for saying that they would resign if bifurcation was announced. He wondered: “What purpose would it serve then?”
He recalled that there were demands for division in other States also and demanded implementation of the recommendations of the Sri Krishna Committee.
