An RTC bus driver was killed on the spot and a few passengers were injured after the bus hit a lorry going ahead on the National Highway near Payakaraopeta in the district on Monday.

The incident reportedly occurred after the bus driver fell asleep. The deceased was identified as PS Narayana (42), resident of Rajamahendravaram.

According to Payakaraopeta SI Satyanarayana, the RTC bus which was heading to Rajamahendravaram from Visakhapatnam hit a lorry allegedly at a very high speed. While Narayana died on the spot, the conductor of the bus and four passengers received injuries. The police said the bus left from Rajahmundry depot at 11p.m. on Sunday night and reached Visakhapatnam at 1.45 a.m. on Monday. Immediately it started from Vizag and the incident happened around 5.10 a.m. The driver did not have any rest and the way he hit the vehicle confirms that the driver was drowsy, the police added.
