At a round-table of political parties convened by the CITU-affiliated Steel Plant Employees’ Union, the recognised union of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, a decision was taken to take out a rally here on June 29 to extend support to the agitation being organised by the TDP and other parties for a steel plant at Kadapa. The meeting unanimously resolved to step up campaign for allotment of captive iron ore mines in Prakasam and West Godavari districts for VSP and asked the State and Central governments to clear it immediately.
CPI (M) leader Ch. Narsinga Rao said the Kadapa steel plant was promised in the AP State Reorganisation Act, 2014, and the onus of establishing it in a backward area is on the Centre. He said Obulapuram and nearby areas in Antantapur contained 160 million tonne of reserves and according to estimates made by Bureau of Mines, the second phase would have a potential to explore 100 million tonne.
Mr. Rao said they would organise dharnas in front PSUs in the city.
