Population explosion is leading to depleting resources and global warming due to increase in carbon dioxide and depletion of ozone layer, Andhra University Rector G. Ganapathi has said.

At a meeting organised in connection with the World Population Day celebrations on Thursday, he said that India’s population by 2012 had crossed 127 crore and it was the responsibility of each and every individual to contribute to control of population.

He underlined the role of youth in this regard.

District Medical and Health Officer Syamala said that the World Population Day was first observed on July 11, 1987. She said people should realise the importance of the slogan ‘Small family – happy family’ and adopt family planning methods. Efforts should be made to prevent child marriages.

Commendation certificates were presented to medical officers, nurses, ANM s, anganwadi workers, and CDPOs and Asha workers, who contributed extensively towards population control.

Earlier, a rally was organised from the Gandhi statue at Asilametta to the AU College of Engineering via Sri Sampath Vinayaka temple, Siripuram, and Rural SP Office. The rally was flagged off by District Collector V. Seshadri.
