Besides deliberating on the long-term measures to check beach erosion, the GVMC and the Visakhapatnam Port Trust will take up joint measures to improve roads in the port area and beautify the city.
To begin with, VPT Chairman M.T. Krishnababu and Municipal Commissioner M.V. Satyanarayana will take up a joint field inspection on May 28. They will also hold a review meeting with officials.
Measures to check surge of the sea have assumed significance in view of the alarming proportion it reached a few months ago, almost breaching a stretch of the footpath on the Beach Road.
In yet another surge on the full moon day on May 14, the sea advanced by about 15 to 20 feet at a park in Bheemunipatnam.
Mr. Satyanarayana said, as against 6 lakh tonnes, sand traps received only 2.5 lakh tonnes. Sand from the traps will be dispersed for beach nourishment.
A team from the Central Water and Power Research Station, Pune, would visit the city on May 30 and give its report on erosion, Mr. Satyanarayana told reporters who met him on Wednesday.
Based on its report, measures will be initiated to check erosion.
The Commissioner said that, on his part, he had sent a report to the Ministry of Surface Transport on shipping activities at ports, including the new ones, and how it was affecting the beach, and the need for a project to take remedial measures.
The new VPT Chairman, who was Joint Collector here earlier, was keen on beautification of roads in the city, particularly those in the port area, and the port connectivity road, Mr. Satyanarayana said.
