While several districts in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana States are reeling under heavy rains for the last few days, Visakhapatnam has received a little over the normal and has not witnessed much damage.

The sowing in many parts of the district is usually late since most of the area is rain-fed and the present spell of rains is being welcomed, according to reports from the rural area.

There is only rain and no wind, hence damages are not reported.

Due to the heavy rains in their catchment areas rivers like Sarada, Varaha, Sileru and the hill steams in the Agency area are in spate but are not alarming.

In some areas, fields adjacent to rivers and canals were inundated but the extent of the area is small.

The district has no major irrigation dam and water from the minor structures is being released to stabilise the level as the inflows were good.

There are reports of a farmer’s body along with carcasses of some cattle flowing in a rivulet near Narayanapuram in Rambilli mandal.

Collector’s tour

On Saturday Collector Pravin Kumar during a whirlwind tour of Chodavaram mandal to oversee how the sanitation programme is going on, visited the site near Rayapurajupalem where a bridge across the Yerragedda was washed away two days ago. The temporary causeway on the Sarada near Gavaravaram was washed away.

There was a respite from rain on Saturday compared to Friday as only a few light showers were experienced.
