Rising chain-snatching cases in Nehru Nagar cause for concern

Poorly-lit streets, growing incidences of chain-snatching and poor drainage system are some of the issues that residents of Ramnagar face. These problems are particularly prevalent in the Nehru Nagar area. “Chain-snatching cases are regular here. My mother and sister-in-law were victims,” said S. Sambasiva Rao, a resident of the colony. Lack of streetlights makes it more unsafe for the residents to walk around in the night.

The busy market days at Nehru Nagar are a nightmarish experience for people driving through the narrow lanes. Traffic flow is badly affected during the evenings when office goers return home. “There are regular bottle-necks. The problem is that there is no scope for road expansion,” said B. Rama Jogi, a resident of Ramnagar. Houses dot both sides of the street. The area being the main market place of Ramnagar makes it even more chaotic.

Sometime back, drainage issues used to create havoc in many areas. While the GVMC has rectified most of the problem, open drains in some of the old parts of Ramnagar still persist, posing health problems for the residents.

The colony residents also feel the need for a ‘kalyana mandapam’ to be developed in the area with the population of the locality growing.
