RINL to handover smuggling case to CBI

February 03, 2013 02:34 pm | Updated June 13, 2016 04:38 am IST - VISAKHAPATNAM:

Conceding the demand by various unions and Opposition parties, the management of Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL) has decided to refer the case pertaining to smuggling of finished products from the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant by some unscrupulous elements to the Central Bureau of Investigation.

Sources told The Hindu on Saturday that the top management of RINL will write to the government to hand over the case to the premier investigation agency.

The Steel Plant Police recently registered FIR after the CISF unit of VSP seized a huge sleeper-truck inside the plant laden with over 22 tonnes of finished products.

Representatives from Steel Plant Employees’ Union, Visakha Steel Employees’ Congress, CITU, AITUC, TDP and CPI(M) organised protest programmes demanding CBI probe stating that several bigwigs were involved in the smuggling racket.

They alleged that the transport firm, to which the lorry belonged, was involved in smuggling for past three years in connivance with the employees and security personnel.

“Due to seriousness of the issue, we will ask CBI to investigate into the matter,” A senior official of RINL said.
