Buoyed by the successful tapping of ‘first heat’ from the New Steel Melt Shop-2 marking the completion of Rs.12,500-crore 6.3 million tonne expansion, Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited has undertaken the capital repairs of Blast Furnace Godavari to increase production by half a million tonnes.
RINL Chairman-cum-Managing Director A.P. Choudhary congratulated the Projects and Works Collective, the various equipment suppliers, civil and structural contractors for launching hot metal production from SMS-2 and appreciated the efforts put in by all of them for rolling out finished products shortly with the commissioning state-of-the-art Wire Rod Mill.
After achieving a throughput of 37.74 million tonne of hot metal on carbon lining in a campaign life of 23 years, the Blast Furnace-1 Godavari was successfully blown out recently for Category-1 capital repairs.
The capital repairs would take 135 days and the modernisation of the furnace would enhance the production by 0.5 million tonne with the increase in volume from the present 3200 cum to 3800 cum, an RINL spokesman said.
RINL surpassed the sales target by achieving a turnover of Rs. 6,807 crore during April-October, 2013 compared to corresponding period last year (CPLY) of Rs. 6,736 crore.
The sales turnover of Rs. 1,033 crore in October represents a growth of 7 per cent over CPLY. Iron and steel sales during the period recorded a growth of 11 per cent.
Captive power generation
The Navratna company received a shot in the arm with the commissioning of 67.5 MW Turbo Generator No.5 put up by BHEL at Visakhapatnam Steel Plant on Wednesday.
The total cost of the plant including civil, structural and auxiliary works is around Rs.343 crore.
The commissioning of Turbo Generator-5 will enable VSP to meet part of its captive need including emergency requirement of the expansion plant.
