The crisis faced by the steel industry due to volatile international market, increase in imports and slump in the economy will come up for discussion at a national-level conference being organised by Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited and monthly magazine Steel & Metallurgy on November 3.

About 150 delegates, including some experts of international repute, will attend the conference. The theme of the meeting will be ‘long products – technology, market and applications.’ The conference assumes importance in the backdrop of the crisis faced by major steel consuming sectors despite projections of higher economic growth.

Muted growth

Construction, automobile and manufacturing sectors have faced muted growth in recent times impacting the Indian steel industry at large as the industry is beset with non-availability of raw material, unbridled steel imports and volatile international markets. “It is time when Indian steel industry should move ahead with future oriented steps such as adopting latest technologies in production processes, focusing on value-added products, making footprints in uncharted international markets and creating new applications of steel,” a member of the organising committee has said.

The conference is expected to provide a platform to participants to explore new opportunities.
