There is scope for collaboration between the Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited, corporate entity of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, and GITAM University in diverse fields for mutual benefit and it would also help promote academic excellence in the city, RINL Director (Personnel) Y.R Reddy said.

While the students of the varsity would get an opportunity to undertake projects in different disciplines of engineering in the steel plant, the Company would be able to source trained personnel locally, he said speaking at the University here on Friday after a memorandum of understanding was signed between the RINL and the university.

Science was not being given due importance in many academic institutions and it should be corrected, he said.

The emphasis, he said, should be on studying cutting edge technologies in steel-making to reduce costs and improve quality, and the inputs provided by the university would be vital.

Vice-Chancellor G. Subrahmanyam said it was a historic moment for both the institutions and the importance of industry-university interface could not be overemphasised. Pro-chancellor Harinarayana also spoke. Registrar Potharaju and A. Radhakrishna, the General Manager (HRD), signed and exchanged the documents.

D.N. Rao, the Executive Director (Operations), also spoke.
