The 'punnaga' tree that got uprooted partially under the impact of Hudhud being being restored on the Circuit House-Navy House Road in Visakhapatnam on Wednesday.

More than six weeks after Hudhud struck, a tree that proudly sprouted after severe damage to its roots was restored on Wednesday.

A ‘punnaga’, also known as ‘akasamalli’, tree on the Circuit House-Navy House Road was about 48-ft. tall before the gales partially uprooted it. The tree fell on a house.

Focus turned to the Circuit House-Navy House Road during the day with Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu flying in to attend the Navy Day celebration on Thursday.

He will come to Circuit House and after the Navy Day celebration will go the Navy House to attend the At Home being organised by Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Eastern Naval Command Vice-Admiral Satish Soni.

The staff were about to remove the tree when Zone III Commissioner Y. Srinivasa Rao and Assistant Director (Horticulture) M. Damodara Rao saw the possibility of reviving it.

“Since the tree sprouted fresh green leaves in spite of only 40 per cent roots holding it, we have decided to revive it,” Mr. Damodara Rao said.

The tree was planted again at the same place using an earth-moving machine and a crane. A six-foot pit was dug all around and filled with soil for the purpose.
