Swathi likes to get engrossed in a book every morning but her hectic lifestyle hardly leaves her with any time to read. She needs to plan for the day’s cooking, do the household chores, pack food for her kids and step out for work. She has often longed for a quiet place to pursue her favourite hobby-reading but her endless errands and distractions come in her way.
When it comes to reading, many are confronted by similar situations. As television, movies, friends and other domestic demands distract one’s concentration level, study centres are fast catching-up in the city. The reasons to choose such centres vary among individuals.
Surprisingly, the reading centre is not confined to just students.
There are family persons, medicos and professionals who spend quality time here. For K. Vishnu Teja, a student, ambience matters a lot while concentrating on studies. “I am unable not concentrate on my studies if there are distractions at home like television, friends and family members. I can only do well in exams when I study without any such distractions.”
Some want to concentrate better, a few want to download materials and study, while others like to get equipped for entrance tests. For P.V. Santosh Kumar who prepares for group IV exams, his son distracts him. “I prefer to browse the net and prepare for my competitive exams. My little son doesn’t allow me to do so. The reading centre helps me access net and download relevant material for my competitive exams.”
With a fee ranging between Rs.1,000 and Rs.1,500 per month, one can spend an entire day or a few hours depending on their requirement at the centre. Inspired by the reading centres existing in Hyderabad, founder of Deepa’s Reading Centre Suresh Katta said, “Initially, we wanted to introduce the centre and check the response. With overwhelming response, the shift starts from 4 a.m. and continues until midnight.” The centre that started with 23 cabins a few months back is now extending up to 80 cabins.
