Shaken up by the tragic death of the 23-year-old victim of gangrape in New Delhi, the city has joined hands demanding capital punishment for the rapists.
As many as 250 volunteers from Voice of Vizag (VoV) in association with Surajya Movement (SM) took out a rally from the Beach Road to Collector’s Bungalow to pay condolence to the victim who passed away on Saturday. Shattered by the tragic incident, many youngsters joined the rally from various colleges like Narayana, Chaitanya, Sri Gayatri, NRI Junior College, PRISM Degree College and other educational institutions. Raising slogans and carrying placards, the volunteers joined the protest and submitted a memorandum to District Collector V. Seshadri at Collector’s Bungalow.
The idea is to create awareness among the youngsters to be more conscious and fight for their own protection, said president of SM I.M. Ahmed. “We want women to be bold and come forward to fight for justice. Our common objective is to demand capital punishment for the rapists,” he said.
Elaborating about the protest, one of the organisers of VoV Manognya said: “We want to be treated with respect and dignity in society. The incident is an eye-opener for all the women to be more aggressive and fight for their respect and identity. We want the government to review the laws and award more stringent punishment to the offenders to act as a deterrent and bring down incidence of such brutal crime.”
