An awareness rally on the need to avoid use of plastic carry bags on the eve of the ban on them coming into force was organised on the Beach Road on Sunday.

The rally ‘Beach Walk' from Ramakrishna Beach to the YMCA was organised by Vizag Journalists' Mutually-aided Co-operative House Building Society and Visakhapatnam Sports Journalists' Association (VISJA) in concert with the Andhra University.

District Collector Lav Agarwal who flagged off the walk spoke on the danger to environment from plastic which was not biodegradable because of which the Central Government imposed the ban.

The rally was led by roller-skaters and around 250 school and university students participated. Andhra University Rector P.V.G.D. Prasada Reddy stressed the need for environmental balance in view of the threat from global warming. Retired additional SP T.S.R. Prasad, AU Sports Officer Shyambabu, Port Sports Officer Manikyala Rao, society secretary D. Ravikumar, VISJA secretary N. Nageswara Rao, VJF secretary G. Srinubabu, APWJF city president P. Narayan and VJF former president S.S. Sivasankar participated.
