Star hotels felicitate workers
Enthusiasm marked the May Day celebrations in the city with several organisations taking out rallies and administering pledge among the workers for a united fight to assert their rights.
Indian Federation of Trade Union (IFTU) observed the day as struggle day in protest against the government's failure to check rising prices of essential commodities.
All the shops and establishments remained closed on the occasion of May Day. The star hotels in the city felicitated their workers as part of May Day celebration.
CITU and TNTUC took out a rally from Jagadamba junction to GVMC Gandhi statue and raised slogans against anti-labour policies of the UPA Government at the Centre and the Congress Government in the State and demanded enforcement of eight-hour per shift working for all the workers.
Ajay Sarma, CITU district president criticised the delay in providing social security measures to the members of unorganised sector. Comprehensive legislation for their protection should be done immediately, he said and called for providing statutory benefits for workers of unorganised sector.
