Rain lashes Coastal Andhra

Rain lashed different parts of the State with the nine coastal districts receiving copious rains for the first time this season. Barring Chittoor, all the other 12 districts received rain in the 24 hours ending on Monday morning.

Roof collapses, mudslides and wall collapses occurred in some places. An elderly couple died when the roof of their house collapsed under the weight of rainwater in Ponnavolu in Kadapa district. Some property, including an auto-rickshaw, was damaged when boulders and mud that became loose slid of a hill-slope in Vijayawada.

While the average rainfall in Coastal Andhra district was 25.5 mm, the average rainfall of the Rayalaseema districts was 2.3 mm West Godavari received the maximum of 91 mm and Nellore received a minimum of 4.9 mm.

Guntur district received second highest rainfall of 52.8 mm. Prakasam and Krishna recorded rainfall of 15.4 mm 39.4 mm respectively.

Despite the heavy rain there is still deficit of rainfall in West Godavari, Guntur, Prakasam and Krishna districts.

While the normal rainfall in West Godavari is 247.7 mm for the season the rainfall received this year was just 159.5 mm which is a 36 per cent departure from normal. Similarly, there is 39 per departure of rainfall in Guntur district, 29 per cent in Prakasam and 57 per cent in Krishna.

There is a 36 per cent departure of rainfall in Coastal Andhra and 17 per cent in Rayalaseema this season till now. Kurnool is the only district to have a surplus of rainfall till now.
