State BJP president and Visakhapatnam MP K. Haribabu on Monday said the Centre would take an appropriate decision on formation of a new railway zone with headquarters in Visakhapatnam.

He told reporters on the sidelines of a workshop on role of independent directors in public sector enterprises conducted by the Ministry of Heavy Industries that they had already fulfilled 85% of promises made in the A.P. Reorganisation Act. “Forming a railway zone is a political decision. It will be taken at an appropriate time,” he remarked when asked whether the zone, a pre-poll promise made by the BJP and its ally Telugu Desam Party, would materialise soon. He said sanctioning a new zone was under active consideration of the government.

On Special Category Status, he said they had come out with a special package in consultation with the State government.

DCI disinvestment

On the decision of the Union government for strategic disinvestment of the Dredging Corporation of India, he said it was the prerogative of the government to take decisions to run which public sector enterprise depending on ground realities.

When a correspondent pointed out that DCI had been earning profits since its inception in 1976, he said “look at its balance sheet. The profit is declining from 2015-16.”
