Taking strong objection to the attempts by the NDA government at Centre to shelve the Dugarajapatnam major port, Pradesh Congress Commitee president N. Raghuveera Reddy on Wednesday reminded that the project was one of the major promises made to the people of Andhra Pradesh in the Andhra Pradesh Bifurcation Act, 2014.

“The question of technical or environmental clearances would not arise now. All these issues were solved prior to the bifurcation itself. ‘No objection’ was taken even from the Sriharikota space centre,” said Mr. Raghuveera Reddy, who was here to address a workshop attended by the Congress mandal and town-level presidents.

Later, addressing a press conference, Mr. Raghuveera Reddy dismissed as false and unfounded the claims on unviability of the Dugarajapatnam port, saying that the then United Progressive Alliance government had considered all these aspects before giving environmental and forest clearances for the prestigious project.

He said that the present attempts were obviously intended to benefit the private ports like the one at Krishnapatnam and the responsibility for this objectionable development should be taken by Union Urban Development Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu and Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu.
