Rollback of decision on bifurcation demanded; GVMC employees announce 72-hour pendown strike

Pendurthy MLA Panchakarla Ramesh Babu and some other Congress leaders were arrested when they staged a protest against the bifurcation of the State opposite the Gandhi statue on Monday.

The MLA and Congress leaders Behara Bhaskara Rao, Pedada Ramani Kumari, Vengal Rao and former corporator Gouri demanded rollback of the decision on bifurcation. Two Town Inspector Govinda Rao said that the MLA and others were taken into preventive custody and were released later.

The fasting student JAC leaders, who were shifted to the King George Hospital for treatment on Sunday, broke their fast at the hospital on Monday. Andhra University Vice- Chancellor G.S.N. Raju gave them lemon water.

Schools closed

Some educational institutions declared a holiday for the whole of this week also in view of the agitations. A parent said that the engineering college in which his son was studying closed on July 31 and would reopen only on August 12.

Some students were arrested by the police on Monday when they staged a dharna opposite a private college at Asilmetta demanding its closure.

The staff of Simhachalam Devasthanam struck work in protest against the bifurcation of the State. Taxi operators took out a rally from the Port Golden Jubilee Hospital to RTC Complex and Autorickshaw drivers took out a rally from RTC Complex to Jagadamba junction demanding rollback of the decision on bifurcation. Traffic at the busy Jagadamba junction was disrupted when members of Samaikhyandhra Muslim JAC, under the aegis of its convener S.A. Rehaman, staged a protest denouncing the bifurcation. JAC leaders Zaheer Ahmed, Sk. Basha, Abida Begum and Syed Mustafa were among those who participated.

Lawyers participated in the relay hunger strike organised under the auspices of the Visakhapatnam Bar Association. Effigies of Sonia Gandhi and KCR were burnt at the hunger strike camp.

A relay hunger strike was launched by the National Mazdoor Union (NMU) of APSRTC at the Maddilapalem City Depot on Monday in support of the Samaikhyandhra agitation.

RTC employees from nine depots in the district attended the relay hunger camp. Addressing the participants, NMU State joint secretary Y. Srinivasa Rao said it was unfortunate that the bifurcation of the State was being done to meet the vested interests of some political leaders.

GVMC employees on Monday announced a 72-hour pen down strike for Samaikhyandhra in response to the call given by the APNGOs Association.

They went in a procession to the Gandhi statue and raised slogans in favour of united Andhra Pradesh.

Rajya Sabha Member T. Subbarami Reddy reportedly met Congress president Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi on Monday and impressed upon her the need to continue the State as integrated Andhra Pradesh and against bifurcation. Doctors, nurses and employees of King George Hospital, under the banner of the United Doctors Forum, consisting of members of IMA, Government Doctors Association, AP Nurses Association and AMCOSA, continued their protest demonstration on Monday. Secretary general of APGDA (Andhra region) P. Shyam Sundar expressed the association’s concern over the safety of Andhra region doctors and staff after the process of Telengana formation was completed. President of APGDA B. Uday Kumar, secretary P. Ashok Kumar, vice-prsident Vijay Sekhar, P.V. Sudhakar, secretary of IMA P.A. Ramani, retired and senior doctors S.V. Adinarayana Rao, E. Pedaveerrraju, K. Venkateswarlu and others participated.

Advocates’ bike rally

More than 300 members of the Visakhapatnam Bar Association took out a bike rally from the District Court to Andhra University campus. Kodi Srinivasa Rao, Nammi Sanyasi Rao, Kuppili Muralidhar, Kanaka Surya Apparao and others participated.
